Associate Professor
The George Washington University, Washington DC

I am an Associate Professor in Human and Organizational Learning (Human Resource Development) in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University –formerly from Colorado State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

I have been a co-investigator for the Collaborative Research Lab at Stanford University and a research assistant for the Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education—a multi-institutional center funded by the National Science Foundation.

My research investigates how engineering students navigate their education programs and how engineering graduates transition into the workplace—specifically studying how they learn and adapt to the social norms of organizations and how they come to understand the social and political systems in the workplace. Current projects include the socialization of first-year students into engineering, the experiences of engineering interns, and the unique learning and development that occurs when engineering students participate in international service projects. In addition, I am  studying the socialization of new faculty into their positions in the university, and what and how medical students learn their professional work in their clerkship experiences. Research interests include multi-disciplinary approaches to philosophy, theory, organization studies, management, professional education, workplace learning and performance, and socialization.

I earned a Ph.D. in Human Resource Development with a minor in Business Administration (concentrating on Strategic Management and Organization) from the University of Minnesota. Previously, I earned an MBA in Marketing and a Bachelor’s of Science in Education. Outside of work, my interests include a passion for the arts, sailing, and travel.

    Dear Professor Korte
I am a civil servant working in Ireland’s Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and am doing a part time Masters in HR Strategies at Dublin City University. My thesis will be on social capital at senior levels of the Irish Civil Service. I would like to explore in particular whether those who are recruited at senior levels from outside the Civil Service build different types of social networks than internal appointees; and how such new recruits balance bridging and bonding forms of social capital.

I’m proposing to use a qualitiative approach to the research and I was very interested to read your article /Getting on Board: Organizational Socialization and the contribution of social capital” which appears to be among the few pieces of relevant research that take a qualitative approach to research in relation to social capital and socialisation. I wonder would you be willing to share the list of questions or interview schedule that guided you in relation to this article or any similar piece of qualtitative research you may have undertaken in this field?
I would be very grateful for any assistance
    Many thanks
